What is Self-Regulation?Self-regulation is the ability to monitor and regulate one’s own emotions in response to things happening in the environment- you must have self-awareness, inhibitory control and strong working-memory to be successful at regulating yourself. When we think of Self-Regulation, many people think of the program developed by Dr. Stuart Shanker. Shanker and his team have defined self-regulation as:
...how we respond to stress—whether in a manner that promotes or restricts growth. |
The video here is produced by the MEHRIT centre, and features a succinct definition of regulation. I found this video to be quite helpful for my own learning as I made connections between self-regulation, SEL and mindfulness. This video is also useful in developing an understanding of Shanker's program and the basics of some ways we can integrate self-regulation into the classroom (even if it might not directly align with Shanker's program).

Please see the below links for further information and resources about self-regulation.
Raising Children Australia outlines what self-regulation entails (what it is, why it is important, when/how to teach it, etc.)
The Edutopia link will give further information and ideas about implementing supports for self-regulation in the classroom.

Lastly, here you can find a video (similar to the one shared on the SEL page) that outlines the what and why of self-regulation. Through this video you will find some connections to SEL and the importance of self-regulation for developing mindfulness strategies!
